Jenny Atmar & George Rojano
About Urban Roots:
The only farm-based youth leadership organization in Austin, TX, Urban Roots has been growing with youth leaders for 15 years. Urban Roots envisions a thriving food system cultivated by youth and community that is sustainable, equitable, and just. To achieve that vision, Urban Roots works with youth leaders to grow fresh food and build a community dedicated to achieving food equity. Youth, staff and volunteers grow fresh produce on UR’s two farms in East and South Austin and work with partners and community leaders to directly address food access for their neighbors throughout the year.
About Jenny Atmar:
Jenny has been a farmer at Urban Roots since March of 2023. Jenny got into farming because they view food as a powerful means of connection, both with people in our community and the land itself. Jenny believes in revolution in agriculture & food systems, advocating for practices that nourish not only the earth, but also our physical, mental, spiritual, and communal well being. Their work centers around intentional farming, encouraging others to pay attention to the natural systems, connections & cycles around us while also teaching folks how they can grow food in a way that works for them. You can often find Jenny riding around on the tractor at Urban Roots or floating around a bed of vegetables, eagerly awaiting someone to ask them to identify a bug or a “weed”.
About George Rojano:
George joined Urban Roots in September of 2023. As the representative for the Farm Team regarding educational tours and volunteer days, George’s responsibilities primarily include leading volunteer days and supporting the Programs Team with educational tours, on top of everyday farming duties. As an alumnus of high school programming with Urban Roots, George was inspired to learn more about the natural world and sought an education in environmental science, with a focus on sustainable food and agriculture. Being curious has always been a key characteristic of his, guiding his personal and professional approach to life and farming.
Where to find Urban Roots Farm:
Urban Roots distributes over 20,000 pounds of food annually through our Hojas and bulk distribution programs. These programs work with community leaders and Food Access partners in the Austin area to improve access to healthy produce.
