Field Guide is proud to again lock arms with our partner, Central Texas Food Bank (CTFB). A non-profit that’s been feeding Texans and fighting hunger for over 40 years, Central Texas Food Bank represents everything that’s right about ending hunger in Central Texas.
Now our partner for four years running, we couldn’t be more aligned with the group’s purpose and mission. Check out a brief excerpt from our interview with Mark Jackson, Chief Development Officer, to find out why.
Field Guide: Why does the Central Texas Food Bank x Field Guide Festival partnership make sense to achieve your community goals and mission?
Mark: The Food Bank’s mission has evolved, focusing not only on ensuring that each of our neighbors has access to nutritious food today, but also is providing the resources necessary for all Central Texans to access food independently in the future. Since Field Guide Fest is dedicated to elevating the conversation around our local food system, it’s a perfect fit for the meaningful outcomes we envision for our region. The festival highlights the vital role that farmers and chefs play in our community and provides a platform for attendees to celebrate them.
Field Guide: What role do local farmers, chefs, and producers play in addressing food insecurity in Central Texas?
Mark: Farmers contribute by growing a diverse range of crops, helping to reduce our reliance on large-scale national and international suppliers. Chefs, through their creativity and commitment to using local ingredients, help build demand for locally grown produce, making it more viable for farmers to continue their work. By collaborating with these local partners, we can increase access to healthier food, improve the nutritional quality of meals for those in need, and create a more resilient food system that better withstands disruptions like natural disasters or economic downturns.
Field Guide: What can we all do to help in the fight against hunger in our city and surrounding areas?
Mark: First and foremost, it is critical that we unite around the idea that food insecurity in our community is unacceptable. We need a strong coalition of loud voices ensuring that the appropriate resources are leveraged to support our mission every day. By donating, volunteering, and advocating for this work, you are providing the fuel to keep the Food Bank moving forward toward our vision of a community where every person has equitable access to healthy food.
Field Guide: In what ways can locals support the Central Texas Food Bank?
Mark: The simplest way to make an impact is by making a monetary donation. Financial resources allow us to secure and distribute the most food possible in the face of growing need, and launch innovative programs designed to address the unique challenges facing our most vulnerable neighbors. We are also enthusiastic about growing our family of supporters and encourage you to consider volunteering.
